Bardou Village,
France
Escape the ordinary, dive into discovery.
Bardou village, high up in the mountainous Parc Naturel Regional du Haut-Languedoc, is the stunning our stunning location for the Breakthrough Programme in France. Situated on a hiking trail miles from any roads, and sitting high above rivers for wild swimming, Bardou is about as remote as one can get in Western Europe.
Rediscovered in 1967 after being deserted post-World War I, Bardou has been lovingly restored, preserving its 17th-century essence. It’s both a blend of simple amenities and untouched charm – one reason why Douglas Adams chose to write The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy here.
Here, you’ll savour authentic French meals, relax by crackling fires, and sleep soundly in nature’s embrace.
“Bardou excelled all expectation; its setting in the mountains and the unreal atmosphere of the village are totally inspiring.”
